Battle of the reward cards – the retailers that give most back
Everyone loves a good reward card, and getting a little bit extra on your purchases - whether that’s free stuff, money-off coupons or vouchers - is a win-win. Still though, at Gala we love to give our customers a great deal, so we did some research into the biggest reward cards out there to find out how they work, and which ones are worth your time.
#7 - M&S Sparks Card
The M&S Sparks Card offers an attention-grabbing ten points per every pound spent, but looking closer to the terms and conditions, the offer doesn’t appear as rosy for customers who aren’t hardcore M&S lovers.
That’s because, unlike most rewards systems, Sparks points don’t actually have a set value. Instead, the more points you earn, the more levels of membership you unlock. Get 3,000 points (£300), for instance, and you’ll unlock level one: a preview of next season’s stock. The highest level, 17,000 (£1,700), gives you access to competitions -still not the best rewards out there, but a worthy benefit if you love the classic British retailer.
#6 – myWaitrose
Different to most rewards cards in that it’s not points-based, myWaitrose lets users pick up to ten products that they then get a 20% discount on – these can be swapped at any time for other products that are part of the scheme.
Alongside this useful feature, the loyalty card lets members enjoy free stuff, including cups of tea and coffee with every purchase, and a free newspaper on transactions over a tenner, making trips to the luxury supermarket that little bit fancier.
#5 - Nectar Card
The rewards system most people associate with Sainsbury’s has a huge reach, allowing cardholders to earn one point per £1 (equivalent to 0.5p a point) on purchases across 500 businesses. These can be spent across 128 brands, or alternatively exchanged for rewards such as free drinks at Caffè Nero or cinema tickets at Vue.
#4 - Co-op Membership
Very different to all of our other reward card contenders, Co-op Membership earns 5% on the retailer’s own brand products and services across all of the company’s different arms including their funeral and insurance businesses, as well as donating 1% of the volume of the sale to charity. It also gives the chance to vote on company matters and enjoy a share of the profits, since you’re not a member of the co-operative.
Membership earns you 5p for every £1 you spend, but it’s only on own-brand products, so while it’s a huge earner if you love Co-op products, it’s not great if you’re a bigger fan of brands.
#3 - Morrisons More Card
A great card if you enjoy shopping at the no-frills grocery shop, the Morrisons More Card pays out five points for every £1 spent on any product in store. The rewards are paid out in the form of vouchers measured in the thousands, and you’ll have to earn 5,000 points to get the first £5 voucher, which can only be spend in-store within a year of issue.
#2 - Tesco Clubcard
Tesco Clubcard is one of the most well-known rewards schemes, and earns one point worth 1p, per £1 spent. These can be spent anywhere in-store, but you can also boost your points by swapping them for vouchers, redeemable in-store or with any of the scheme’s reward partners, including Prezzo, Treatwell and Cineworld. When you get vouchers, your points value is tripled, giving them a healthy boost.
#1 - Boots Advantage Card
Giving cardholders four points per £1, Boots Advantage Card is arguably one of the best major store cards out there, offering a whopping amount back on every pound spent, all for the grand total of absolutely nothing. Each point is worth 1p, so for every £1 you spend, you enjoy a 4% discount credited to your Advantage Card.
If that wasn’t enough, Boots also runs Mega Points Weekends that earn you more points per card – time your purchases right and you could end up saving lots on your cosmetics, toiletries and pharmaceuticals each year!
